Singlyandintwosandthreestheyleapedtheboma,untilthelittleenclosurewasfilledwithcursingmenandscreaminghorsesbattlingfortheirliveswiththegreen—eyeddevilsofthejungle。 Withthechargeofthefirstlion,JaneClaytonhadscrambledtoherfeet,andnowshestoodhorror—struckatthesceneofsavageslaughterthatswirledandeddiedabouther。Onceaboltinghorseknockedherdown,andamomentlateralion,leapinginpursuitofanotherterror—strickenanimal,brushedhersocloselythatshewasagainthrownfromherfeet。 butforthemenandthewomannosuchescapewaspossible。 Ahorse,struckbyastraybullet,fellbesideJaneClayton,alionleapedacrosstheexpiringbeastfulluponthebreastofablacktrooperjustbeyond。Themanclubbedhisrifleandstruckfutilelyatthebroadhead,andthenhewasdownandthecarnivorewasstandingabovehim。
