Itappearedtheymustreturntothelaststationtowaitforasnow-ploughtocleartheline。Itwas,explainedtheconductor,barelyamilefromShepherdstown,wheretherewasagoodhotelandachanceofbreakingthejourneyforthenight。 Shepherdstown!ThenametouchedsomedimchordinBobFalloner\'smemoryandconscience——yetonethatwasvague。ThenhesuddenlyrememberedthatbeforeleavingNewYorkhehadreceivedaletterfromHoustoninforminghimofLasham\'sdeath,remindinghimofhispreviousbounty,andbegginghim——ifhewentWest——tobreakthenewstotheLashamfamily。Therewasalsosomeallusiontoajokeabouthis(Bob\'s)photograph,whichhehaddismissedasunimportant,andevennowcouldnotrememberclearly。Forafewmomentshisconscienceprickedhimthatheshouldhaveforgottenitall,butnowhecouldmakeamendsbythisprovidentialdelay。Itwasnotatasktohisliking;inanyothercircumstanceshewouldhavewritten,buthewouldnotshirkitnow。
