WanLeewasplacedattheschoolofaChinesemissionary,——anintelligentandkind-heartedclergyman,whohadshowngreatinterestintheboy,andwho,betterthanall,hadawonderfulfaithinhim。Ahomewasfoundforhiminthefamilyofawidow,whohadabrightandinterestingdaughterabouttwoyearsyoungerthanWanLee。Itwasthisbright,cheery,innocent,andartlesschildthattouchedandreachedadepthintheboy’snaturethathithertohadbeenunsuspected;thatawakenedamoralsusceptibilitywhichhadlainforyearsinsensiblealiketotheteachingsofsociety,ortheethicsofthetheologian。
Thesefewbriefmonths——brightwithapromisethatweneversawfulfilled——musthavebeenhappyonestoWanLee。Heworshippedhislittlefriendwithsomethingofthesamesuperstition,butwithoutanyofthecaprice,thathebestoweduponhisporcelainPagangod。
