AlthoughEmilyDickinsonhadbeeninthehabitofsendingoccasionalpoemstofriendsandcorrespondents,thefullextentofherwritingwasbynomeansimaginedbythem。Herfriend\"H。H。\" Towhatfurtherrigorouspruningherverseswouldhavebeensubjectedhadshepublishedthemherself,wecannotknow。Theyshouldberegardedinmanycasesasmerelythefirststrongandsuggestivesketchesofanartist,intendedtobeembodiedatsometimeinthefinishedpicture。 EmilyDickinsonappearstohavewrittenherfirstpoemsinthewinterof1862。InalettertooneofthepresentEditorstheAprilfollowing,shesays,\"Imadenoverse,butoneortwo,untilthiswinter。\" Thehandwritingwasatfirstsomewhatlikethedelicate,runningItalianhandofoureldergentlewomen;butassheadvancedinbreadthofthought,itgrewbolderandmoreabrupt,untilinherlatestyearseachletterstooddistinctandseparatefromitsfellows。Inmostofherpoems,particularlythelaterones,everythingbywayofpunctuationwasdiscarded,exceptnumerousdashes;andallimportantwordsbeganwithcapitals。Theeffectofapageofhermorerecentmanuscriptisexceedinglyquaintandstrong。Thefac-similegiveninthepresentvolumeisfromoneoftheearliertransitionperiods。Althoughthereisnowhereadate,thehandwritingmakesitpossibletoarrangethepoemswithgeneralchronologicaccuracy。 Asarule,theverseswerewithouttitles;but\"ACountryBurial,\" \"AThunder-Storm,\"\"TheHumming-Bird,\"andafewotherswerenamedbytheirauthor,frequentlyattheend,——sometimesonlyintheaccompanyingnote,ifsenttoafriend。 Thevariationofreadings,withthefactthatsheoftenwroteinpencilandnotalwaysclearly,haveattimesthrownagooddealofresponsibilityuponherEditors。Butallinterferencenotabsolutelyinevitablehasbeenavoided。Theveryroughnessofherrenderingispartofherself,andnotlightlytobetouched;foritseemsinmanycasesthatsheintentionallyavoidedthesmootherandmoreusualrhymes。 Likeimpressionistpictures,orWagner’sruggedmusic,theveryabsenceofconventionalformchallengesattention。InEmilyDickinson’sexactinghands,theespecial,intrinsicfitnessofaparticularorderofwordsmightnotbesacrificedtoanythingvirtuallyextrinsic;andherversesallshowastrangecadenceofinnerrhythmicalmusic。Linesarealwaysdaringlyconstructed,andthe\"thought-rhyme\"appearsfrequently,——appealing,indeed,toanunrecognizedsensemoreelusivethanhearing。 EmilyDickinsonscrutinizedeverythingwithclear-eyedfrankness。
