Thehandwritingwasatfirstsomewhatlikethedelicate，runningItalianhandofoureldergentlewomen；butassheadvancedinbreadthofthought，itgrewbolderandmoreabrupt，untilinherlatestyearseachletterstooddistinctandseparatefromitsfellows。Inmostofherpoems，particularlythelaterones，everythingbywayofpunctuationwasdiscarded，exceptnumerousdashes；andallimportantwordsbeganwithcapitals。Theeffectofapageofhermorerecentmanuscriptisexceedinglyquaintandstrong。Thefac-similegiveninthepresentvolumeisfromoneoftheearliertransitionperiods。Althoughthereisnowhereadate，thehandwritingmakesitpossibletoarrangethepoemswithgeneralchronologicaccuracy。
