MissDickinsonwasborninAmherst，Mass。，Dec。10，1830，anddiedthereMay15，1886。Herfather，Hon。EdwardDickinson，wastheleadinglawyerofAmherst，andwastreasurerofthewell-knowncollegetheresituated。Itwashiscustomonceayeartoholdalargereceptionathishouse，attendedbyallthefamiliesconnectedwiththeinstitutionandbytheleadingpeopleofthetown。OntheseoccasionshisdaughterEmilyemergedfromherwontedretirementanddidherpartasgracioushostess；norwouldanyonehaveknownfromhermanner，Ihavebeentold，thatthiswasnotadailyoccurrence。
Theannualoccasiononcepast，shewithdrewagainintoherseclusion，andexceptforaveryfewfriendswasasinvisibletotheworldasifshehaddweltinanunnery。Formyself，althoughIhadcorrespondedwithherformanyyears，Isawherbuttwicefacetoface，andbroughtawaytheimpressionofsomethingasuniqueandremoteasUndineorMignonorThekla。
