Thearticulateutteranceofsuchalocalityshouldhavebeenawhisper;alaughorexclamationwasdiscordant;andtheordinarytonesofthehumanvoiceonthenightofthe15thofMay,1868,hadagrotesqueincongruity。 Inthethickdarknessthatclothedthemountainthatnight,thehumanfigurewouldhavebeenlost,orconfoundedwiththeoutlinesofoutlyingbowlders,whichatsuchtimestookuponthemselvesthevaguesemblanceofmenandanimals。Hencethevoicesinthefollowingcolloquyseemedthemoregrotesqueandincongruousfrombeingtheapparentexpressionofanuprightmonolith,tenfeethigh,ontheright,andanothermassofgranite,that,reclining,peepedovertheverge。
