INTRODUCTION ThomasLovePeacockwasbornatWeymouthin1785。Hisfirstpoem,\"TheGeniusoftheThames,\"wasinitssecondeditionwhenhebecameoneofthefriendsofShelley。Thatwasin1812,whenShelley’sagewastwenty,Peacock’stwenty-seven。Theacquaintancestrengthened,untilPeacockbecamethefriendinwhosejudgmentShelleyputespecialtrust。Thereweremanypointsofagreement。 Peacock,atthattime,shared,inamorepracticalway,Shelley’sdesireforrootandbranchreform;bothworepoets,althoughnotequallygifted,andbothlovedPlatoandtheGreektragedians。In\"CrotchetCastle\"PeacockhasexpressedhisowndelightinGreekliteraturethroughthetalkoftheReverendDr。Folliott。
