so，indefianceofStrauss，thedisciplehechosewasthatveryJohn，whosepersonality，asrecognizedbylongtradition，hadbeensomuchdiscredited。Heshowedhoweveninoneofthedisciplestherecollectionofwondersandsignscouldbetranscended，andatlastobliterated，byaspiritualfaithwhichwassustainedbytheneedsandfacultiesofthesoul。Thepoemis，ineffect，aneloquentprotestindefenceof`thebreathandfinerspiritofallknowledge’。”
