AttheSakamokiriverIwasdelightedtocomeupontheonlythoroughlysolidpieceofmodernJapaneseworkthatIhavemetwith——aremarkablyhandsomestonebridgenearlyfinished——thefirstIhaveseen。Iintroducedmyselftotheengineer，OkunoChiuzo，averygentlemanly，agreeableJapanese，whoshowedmetheplans，tookagreatdealoftroubletoexplainthem，andcourteouslygavemeteaandsweetmeats。
