Withunsleepingvigilanceshestoodonguardagainstanythingthatmightbreakthatcircleofherheart’sdevotion。Thecirclemightbe,indeedmustbeenlarged,asforinstancetotakeintheMaitlandboys,Herbert’sclosestchums。Shewaswiseenoughtoseethewisdomofthat,butnothingonearthwouldsheallowtofilchfromherasingleunitofthepricelesstreasuresofherheart。 Tothislawofherlifeshemadeoneglorious,onesplendidexception。Whenhercountrycalled,she,afterweeksofsilent,fierce,lonely,agonisedstrugglegaveupherboyandsenthimwithvoiceless,tearlesspridetotheWar。 Asherownimmediatehomecirclegrewsmaller,theintensityofherdevotionincreased。Hertwodaughtersbecameherabsorbingconcern。Withthemodernnotionthatagirlmightmakeforherselfacareerinlifeshehadnosympathywhatever。Toseethemhappilymarriedandinhomesoftheirownbecametheabsorbingambitionofherlife。Tothisendsheadministeredhersocialactivities,withthispurposeinviewsheencouragedordiscouragedherdaughters’ friendshipswithmen。Withtheworldlywisdomofwhichshehadherownshareshecametotheconclusionthatineligiblemenfriends,thatis,menfriendsunabletogiveherdaughtersapropersettinginthesocialworld,weretobeeffectivelyeliminated。Thatthemenofherdaughters’choosingshouldbegentlemeninbreedingwentwithoutsaying,butthattheyshouldbesufficientlyendowedwithwealthtosupportapropersocialpositionwasequallyessential。
