Abreachhasalwaysacauseandapurpose。HereistheexplanationofhowtheonewhichledfromthetowercalledthatofMademoiselleandthestablescametobemade。AfterhisinstallationasLaurence’sguardianatCinq-Cygneoldd’Hauteserreconvertedalongravine,throughwhichthewateroftheforestflowedintothemoat,intoaroadwaybetweentwotractsofuncultivatedlandbelongingtothechateau,bymerelyplantingoutinitaboutahundredwalnuttreeswhichhefoundreadyinthenursery。Inelevenyearsthesetreeshadgrownandbranchedsoastonearlycovertheroad,hiddenalreadybysteepbanks,whichranintoalittlewoodofthirtyacresrecentlypurchased。Whenthechateauhaditsfullcomplementofinhabitantstheyallpreferredtotakethiscoveredwaythroughthebreachtothemainroadwhichskirtedtheparkwallsandledtothefarm,ratherthangoroundbytheentrance。Bydintofthususingitthebreachinthesidesofthemoathadgraduallybeenwidenedonbothsides,withallthelessscruplebecauseinthisnineteenthcenturyofoursmoatsarenolongeroftheslightestuse,andLaurence’sguardianhadoftentalkedofputtingthisonetosomeotherpurpose。Theconstantcrumblingawayoftheearthandstonesandgravelhadendedbyfillinguptheditch,sothatonlyafterheavyrainswasthecausewaythusconstructedcovered。Butthebankwasstillsosteepthatitwasdifficulttomakeahorsedescendit,andevenmoredifficulttogethimupuponthemainroad。Horses,however,seemintimesofperiltosharetheirmasters’thought。 Convincedthatnogamewasinthemarshandrepelledbythecraggysidesofthehills,keepersandhuntershadneverexploredorvisitedthisnook,whichbelongedtoapartoftheforestwherethetimberhadnotbeencutformanyyearsandwhichMichumeanttokeepinitsfullgrowthwhenthetimecameroundtofellit。
