Butasfastasonefirewasextinguishedothersbrokeout,fortherainofburningdartsandoflightedpotsorlampsfilledwithoildescendedcontinuouslyfromthecliffabove。Astrangeandterriblesightitwastoseethemflashingdownthroughthedarkness,likethefierydartsthatshalldestroythewickedinthedayofArmageddon。 Still,wetoiledondespairingly。Ontheroofwefourwhitemen,andsomesoldiersunderthecommandofJaphet,werepouringwaterontoseveralofthegildeddomes,whichnowwerewellalight。Closeby,wrappedinadarkcloak,andattendedbysomeofherladies,stoodMaqueda。Shewasquitecalm,althoughsundryburningarrowsandspears,fallingwithgreatforcefromthecliffabove,strucktheflatroofsclosetowhereshestood。 Herladies,however,werenotcalm。Theyweptandwrungtheirhands,whileoneofthemwentintoviolenthystericsinherverynaturalterror。Maquedaturnedandbadethemdescendtothecourtyardofthegateway,whereshesaidshewouldjointhempresently。Theyrushedoff,rejoicingtoescapethesightofthoseburningarrows,oneofwhichhadjustpiercedamanandsethisclothesandhaironfire,causinghimtoleapfromtheroofinhismadness。
