ThatdayhefledtothebushontheBlackUmfoloziriver,andthatnighttheskywascrimsonwiththeburningofthekraalUmgugundhlovu,wheretheElephantshouldtrumpetnomore,andthevultureswerescaredfromtheHillofSlaughterbytheroaringoftheflames。

Nadacriedaloudinfear,andthefangsweresnatchedback,butpresentlysheheardascratchingwithoutthecave,andsawthestoneshake。Thenshethoughtinherfoolishnessthatthewolfknewhowtoopenthestone,andthathewoulddothis,anddevourher,forshehadheardthetalethatallthesewolvesweretheghostsofevilmen,havingtheunderstandingofmen。So,inherfearandfolly,sheseizedtherockanddraggedonitasUmslopogaashadshownherhowtodo。Itshook,itslippedoverthesocketledge,androlledhomelikeapebbledownthemouthofagourd。

Nowforawhilethetwocircledroundandround,eachwaitingforachancetostrike。PresentlyFakusmoteattheheadofUmslopogaas,buttheSlaughtererliftedGroan-Makertowardtheblow。Fakucrookedhisarmandlettheaxecurldownwards,sothatitskeenedgesmoteUmslopogaasuponthehead,severinghisman\'sringandthescalpbeneath。

AlldaylongNadacrouchedinthecavelisteningtothesoundsofwarthatcreptfaintlyupthemountainside;howlingofwolves,shoutingofmen,andtheclamourofirononiron。Alldaylongshesat,andnoweveningcameapace,andthenoiseofbattledrewnear,swelled,andsank,anddiedaway。SheheardthevoicesoftheWolf-Brethrenastheycalledtoeachotherlikebucks,namingthenumberoftheslain。SheheardGalazi\'scryof“Victory!“andherheartleapttoit,thoughsheknewthattherewasdeathinthecry。Thenforthelasttimesheheardthefaintringingofirononiron,andthelightwentoutandallgrewstill。
