WhetherthiswastrueIdonotknow,butIknowthatintheglendweltacertainwomanofthewoods,whohadherhabitationinacaveandliveduponwhatshecouldkillorstealordigupwithherhands。Nowthiswomanwasmad。Forithadchancedthatherhusbandhadbeen“smeltout“bythewitch-doctorsasaworkerofmagicagainsttheking,andslain。ThenChaka,accordingtocustom,despatchedtheslayerstoeatuphiskraal,andtheycametothekraalandkilledhispeople。Lastofalltheykilledhischildren,threeyounggirls,andwouldhaveassegaiedtheirmother,whensuddenlyaspiritenteredintoheratthesight,andshewentmad,sothattheylethergo,beingafraidtotouchherafterwards。Soshefledandtookupherabodeinthehauntedglen;andthiswasthenatureofhermadness,thatwhenevershesawchildren,andmoreespeciallygirlchildren,alongingcameuponhertokillthemasherownhadbeenkilled。This,indeed,shedidoften,forwhenthemoonwasfullandhermadnessatitshighest,shewouldtravelfartofindchildren,snatchingthemawayfromthekraalslikeahyena。Still,nonewouldtouchherbecauseofthespiritinher,noteventhosewhosechildrenshehadmurdered。
