Ijudgefromthesecircumstances,thatCoveydeemeditbestto<192>givemethego-by。Itis,perhaps,notaltogethercreditabletomynaturaltemper,that,afterthisconflictwithMr。Covey,Idid,attimes,purposelyaimtoprovokehimtoanattack,byrefusingtokeepwiththeotherhandsinthefield,butIcouldneverbullyhimtoanotherbattle。Ihadmadeupmymindtodohimseriousdamage,ifheeveragainattemptedtolayviolenthandsonme。

Thus,theholidays,becamepartandparcelofthegrossfraud,wrongsandinhumanityofslavery。Ostensibly,theyareinstitutionsofbenevolence,designedtomitigatetherigorsofslavelife,but,practically,theyareafraud,institutedbyhumanselfishness,thebettertosecuretheendsofinjusticeandoppression。Theslave\'shappinessisnottheendsought,but,rather,themaster\'s<197ADEVICEOFSLAVERY>safety。Itisnotfromagenerousunconcernfortheslave\'slaborthatthiscessationfromlaborisallowed,butfromaprudentregardtothesafetyoftheslavesystem。Iamstrengthenedinthisopinion,bythefact,thatmostslaveholdersliketohavetheirslavesspendtheholidaysinsuchamannerastobeofnorealbenefittotheslaves。Itisplain,thateverythinglikerationalenjoymentamongtheslaves,isfrownedupon;andonlythosewildandlowsports,peculiartosemi-civilizedpeople,areencouraged。Allthelicenseallowed,appearstohavenootherobjectthantodisgusttheslaveswiththeirtemporaryfreedom,andtomakethemasgladtoreturntotheirwork,astheyweretoleaveit。Byplungingthemintoexhaustingdepthsofdrunkennessanddissipation,thiseffectisalmostcertaintofollow。Ihaveknownslaveholdersresorttocunningtricks,withaviewofgettingtheirslavesdeplorablydrunk。Ausualplanis,tomakebetsonaslave,thathecandrinkmorewhiskythananyother;
