Thetworeportshadacceleratedthemarchoftheenemy。Thesoldiersenteredthedefilewithahastystep;inordertoadvance,theyhadtoremovethetwosoldierswhowerewrithingintheagonyofdeathandobstructingthenarrowpath,andthrowthemintothewatersoftheEisach,whichreceivedwithawildroarthetwocorpses,thefirstvictimsofthereopeningstruggle。 MeanwhiletheTyrolesesharpshooterontheheightabovehadreloadedhisrifleandshotanothersoldier。Onseeingthis,heutteredaloudJodler,madealeapofjoy,andnoddedlaughinglytotheenemy,whocastthreateningglancesonhim。Buthedidnotseethatoneoftheofficersbelowcalledfoursoldierstohim,pointedhishandatthetopoftherock,andgavethemaquickorder。Thefoursoldierssprangatoncefromtheranksanddisappearedintheshrubberycoveringthebaseoftherock。
