Themassesofanypeople，howeverintelligent，areverylittlemovedbyabstractprinciplesofhumanityandjustice，untilthoseprinciplesareinterpretedforthembythestingingcommentaryofsomeinfringementupontheirownrights，andthentheirinstinctsandpassions，oncearoused，doindeedderiveanincalculablereinforcementofimpulseandintensityfromthosehigherideas，thosesublimetraditions，whichhavenomotivepoliticalforcetilltheyarealliedwithasenseofimmediatepersonalwrongorimminentperil。ThenatlastthestarsintheircoursesbegintofightagainstSisera。Hadanyonedoubtedbeforethattherightsofhumannatureareunitary，thatoppressionisofonehuetheworldover，nomatterwhatthecoloroftheoppressed，——hadanyonefailedtoseewhattherealessenceofthecontestwas，——theeffortsoftheadvocatesofslaveryamongourselvestothrowdiscredituponthefundamentalaxiomsoftheDeclarationofIndependenceandtheradicaldoctrinesofChristianity，couldnotfailtosharpenhiseyes。
