thorsmayconsciouslyorunconsciouslyhavefeltthatourcaseagainstEnglandwasnotintruthverystrong，thatinfactshehadbeenveryeasywithus，fareasierthananyothercountrywasbeingwithitscoloniesatthattime。TheKingofFrancetaxedhiscolonies，theKingofSpainfilledhispurse，unhampered，fromthepocketsofMexicoandPeruandCubaandPortoRico——fromwhateverpocketintowhichhecouldputhishand，andtheDutchweredoingthesamewithouttheslightestquestionoftheirrighttodoit。Ourquarrelwiththemothercountryandourbreakingawayfromherinspiteoftheextremelylightreinshewasdrivinguswith，restedinrealityuponveryslenderjustification。IfeverourauthorsreadofthemeetingbetweenFranklin，Rutledge，andAdamswithGeneralHowe，aftertheBattleofLongIsland，Ithinktheymayhavefeltthatwehadalmostnogrievanceatall。Theplaintruthofitwas，wehadbeenallowedforsolongtobesonearlyfreethatwedeterminedtobefreeentirely，nomatterwhatEnglandconceded。
Thereforetheseauthorsofourschooltextbooksfeltthattheyneededtobolsterourcauseupforthebenefitoftheyoung。Accordinglyourboys\'
andgirls\'senseofindependenceandpatriotismmustbenourishedbymakingEnglandoutafargreateroppressorthanevershereallyhadbeen。
ThesehistoriansdweltasheavilyastheycoulduponGeorgeIIIandhisun-Englishautocracy，andaslightlyastheycouldupontheEnglishPittanduponalltheEnglishsympathywehad。Indeed，aboutthismostofthemdidn\'tsayaword。
